Understanding VLANs and VLAN Trunking | Transforming a Traditional Network into a VLAN-Based Network

When I first got into networking, one of the things that confused me early on was the concept of VLANs — especially VLAN trunking. So if you’re a beginner, this video is for you!

I’m not just going to cover the basics of VLANs either. First, I’ll walk you through what a traditional, pre-VLAN setup might look like. That way, you’ll have something to compare it to and actually see what VLANs replace — whether it’s an older setup or one that doesn’t even use managed switches.

Since I’ll be using a router to help demonstrate the concept, I figured I might as well touch on Layer 3 switches too. I don’t think I could paint the full picture without mentioning them. But don’t worry — that part comes at the very end. If you’re only here for the VLAN content, you’ll get that first.

Either way, this is going to be a slightly longer video… so buckle up — we’re going for a ride!
